Born in Dakar, Senegal, Yacou Mbaye is one of Australia’s leading West African drummers and dancers. Yacou plays and specialises in Sabar, the Talking Drum, Dundun and Djembe.
Yacou has played and performed for greats such as Rokia Traore, Alpha Blondy, Angelique Kidjo, Toumani Diabate and Salif Keita. He is a member of the acclaimed Australian based bands, Keyimba, and Chosani Afrique. He is one of the Artist Directors and a founding member of the West African Festival, Rhythym & Roots, a music and cultural festival showcasing and celebrating musicians from or influenced by West African traditional music.
Yacou, now based in Sydney since 2007, is the Creator and Director of his company “African Vibes”. He is committed to preserving and sharing his culture with people all around the globe, and teaching the rhythms and movement of West Africa to the people of Australia.
Yacou teaches drum and dance classes, designs and delivers workshops, and performs at festivals and corporate events. Yacou’s vibrant energy and radiant smile is legendary in Australia’s world music scene.
Yacou is passionate about passing on the traditions of storytelling through drumming and dance to the next generation. He has toured and taught at 100’s of schools in both urban and regional areas throughout Australia and is often invited back for repeat workshops. Yacou is an experienced teacher, and his warm and engaging style appeals to students of all ages from kindergarten through to Year 12. His workshops are dynamic, interactive and educational, making him a popular and professional facilitator or both drum and dance workshops.
