20 Years of Talking Tabla: Masterclass with Trilok Gurtu (India / Germany)

The virtuoso percussionist Trilok Gurtu is a legend on the jazz, pop and world music stages.

In this hour long session, Trilok tells the audience through words and music the story of his life and experiences. From his humble beginnings in Bombay to now, where he is renowned for collaborating with many of the world’s greatest artists, including Annie Lennox, John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Dave Holland and Sting.

Gurtu’s landmark 1988 debut album, Usfret, attracted a wide audience, blending subtle Indian rhythms and singing with elements of modern jazz and rock. London-based Asian artists including Talvin Singh, Asian Dub Foundation and Nitin Sawhney looked towards Gurtu as a mentor, introducing his music to the dance clubs of Europe. The release of Remembrance in 2002 was another major milestone for Gurtu, leading to his second nomination for the BBC World Music Awards. He composed and performed the score for the recent Australian film Lucky Miles.

Aimed at experienced drummers and percussionists, this is a master class-demonstration, in conversation with a guest host. Through his stories, music and imagery, Trilok will challenge, entertain and enlighten the audience. Don’t miss this opportunity to get up-close and personal with one of the world’s most renowned musicians and musical collaborators.

Trilok Gurtu performs with special guest Niladri Kumar at Riverside Theatres on November 5.
