Trilok Gurtu with special guest Niladri Kumar (India / Germany)
PRESENTED BY SBS RADIO
“…as with all the music Gurtu makes, it is utterly distinctive and difficult to hang a name on… allow yourself to be seduced.’ Allaboutjazz.com
‘Gurtu seduced the auditorium with awesome percussion magic and pure theatre, culminating in the audience singing along with his intricate tabla rhythm vocables.’ The Herald, Glasgow
Parramasala is proud to present one of the greatest pioneers on the international music scene.
The virtuoso percussionist Trilok Gurtu is a legend on the jazz, pop and world music stages. In this stunning concert, Gurtu and his sensational band welcome special guest Niladri Kumar, a maverick superstar of the sitar who won the award for Best Classical / Fusion Instrumental Album at the 2004 MTV Immies.
As a master of the tabla and deeply rooted in the Indian tradition, Gurtu moved to Europe early in his career where he attracted collaborations with many of the greatest names in jazz including John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Evans and Dave Holland.
Gurtu’s landmark 1988 debut album Usfret attracted an even wider audience, blending subtle Indian rhythms and singing with elements of modern jazz and rock. London-based Asian artists including Talvin Singh, Asian Dub Foundation and Nitin Sawhney looked towards Gurtu as a mentor, introducing his music to the dance clubs of Europe. The release of Remembrance in 2002 was another major milestone for Gurtu, leading to his second nomination for the BBC World Music Awards.
He recently composed and performed the score for the hit Australian film Lucky Miles.
Gurtu’s most recent band features musicians from around the world on bass, guitar, violin, didgeridoo and santoor. This concert will be a rare treat for music lovers of all persuasions.
Artists: Trilok Gurtu (India/Germany), Niladri Kumar (India), Carlo Cantini (Italy), Roland Cabezas Voigt (Germany), Johann Berby (France), Filippo Schiavini (Italy), Philip Drummy (Australia)
