Surabhi Saraf & Fiona Davies (USA / Australia)
Contemporary artists Surabhi Saraf and Fiona Davies present works in the public spaces of Parramatta inspired by the act of folding fabric.
Surabhi Saraf from San Francisco is a new media artist whose works meld classical Indian music and choreography with experimental sound and video art. For Parramasala, Saraf presents two works that celebrate the mundane by taking the private, solitary act of folding laundry and presenting it, multiplied, in public spaces.
The work ‘Fold’ comprises of 96 small videos of people folding laundry. Projected on a large-scale, the work magnifies subtle gestural nuances and blurs physical movements into a swarm of activity. ‘Fold {Live}’ is a series of public performances where volunteer performers fold laundry in a choreographed routine. ‘Fold {Live}’ involves diverse individuals in a shared performative experience and draws our attention to overlooked subtleties from our busy daily lives.
Australian visual artist Fiona Davies addresses ideas of meaning and site-specificity. In this work ‘Memorial/ Town Gloves’, Davies looks at the patterning of one item of clothing. Now often abandoned, the wearing of gloves recalls the nuances and practices of their daily use. The domestic patterning of the activity of folding clothes is extended in this work to include pairs of gloves as they are hung out to dry, also recalling the absent presence of their former wearers.
The works by Saraf will be presented in various public spaces of Parramatta during Parramasala. The work by Davies will be located on the exterior of the Parramatta Artists Studios during opening hours only.
