Forum on Displacement
Displacement is a subject many filmmakers and artists alike have explored in their creative work as a response to the impacts that are produced and viscerally felt via the act of moving from one place to another. Displacement is as much a state of mind as it is a physical condition. How can film capture the complexities of displacement? How can film narratives open up a space to critically reflect on experiences of being uprooted, of dislocation, diffusion and dissipation? This forum will bring together a panel of filmmakers and thinkers to explore displacement as a theme in diasporic filmmaking.
The Forum will be chaired by Sydney’s well-known writer, educator and filmmaker Paula Abood. The panel includes Ana Tiwary (filmmaker), Roanna Gonsalves (award winning writer), Shakthi Sivanathan (director of Sydney’s CuriousWorks), Dr Sheleyah Courtney (lecturer in Anthropology and Sociology, University of Sydney) and Anand Naidoo (filmmaker of Curry Munchers which is screening at Parramasala).
