Pattern-ship (Australia / India)

This exhibition explores visual patterning through contemporary cross cultural re-fashioning of textile traditions. It features work by two artist collectives from Rabari and Khatri in Kachchh, a region of Gujarat in western India.

FEATURING LADA DEDIC, KIRI MORCOMBE AND WORKS FROM RABARI AND KHATRI ARTIST COLLECTIVES

Curated by Fiona Davies.

Kachchh is an area characterised by its harsh salt desert landscape as well as its layered nomadic and diasporic cultures. Its abundant textile traditions are reflective of this through a strong sense of creative collaboration and stylistic diversity. Coming from two distinctive traditions, the Rabari and Khatri artists have developed unique textile techniques and ways of interpreting social and economic issues as well as the widespread concern of cultural dislocation.

Pattern-ship also features work by Australian artists Lada Dedic and Kiri Morcombe in response to the works from Kachchh. Lada's needlecraft-based artistic practice utilises cross stitch to translate visual ideas and knitting to create tactile objects. Kiri's whimsical work breathes new life into discarded and unloved objects by refashioning their sentimentality into installations of light, moving imagery and textiles.

The artists of Pattern-ship re-purpose and mash-up materials and techniques from popular culture with traditional textile practices. The resultant works are extraordinary pieces of cross cultural visual patterning.
